Numbers with Numicon

Today Yellow group have been focusing on matching numerals to the correct quantities. To support this we used numicon. Numicon is a resource, which supports children's maths development throughout the setting.

Ollie began by independently categorising the heap of farm animals. He collected the pigs and used his finger to touch each one as he counts '1, 2' Ollie looks at practitioner 'we got 2 Charlotte's' Ollie looks at the pieces of numicon 1 -5 and begins to count placing his finger through each hole. Ollie counts 2. 'this is 2 the same as them' pointing to the pigs. Ollie then continues to categorise the farm animals. Ollie is able to correctly and independently match them all up working out problems as they occur 'this one is not the same as the horses' Ollie counts again 'silly me its number 4 not 5'

Summer was able to identify numerals 1- 5 in a random order and match the numicon pieces with ease

Rumaisa categorised the animals into piles and led them all down. Rumaisa correctly identified how many were in each set  matching the correct numicon pieces. Rumaisa was also able to recognised the numerals 1 and 3

Florence was very quick at matching the numicon pieces to the correct numerals 1-5. Florence then independently matched the numerals 6 - 10 to the correct numicon pieces.
